Born in Solihull, Peter began his training with church choirs at an early age. He has recently achieved a commendation in his Post-Graduate Diploma in singing with Adrian Clarke at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Previously he achieved a BSc in Environmental Geosciences at Sheffield University. Whilst at Sheffield, Peter was choral scholar at St. John’s Church, Ranmoor, and for two years was Chairman of the University Singers’ Society. Having a strong interest in choral conducting and training, he formed Socci Cantorum, the Society’s chamber choir, in 2001, and conducted a diverse range of music from Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb to Rutter’s The Sprig of Thyme. He took up the position of Musical Director of the main chorus in September 2003 and conducted them in a performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle in May 2004. As a choral singer he sang for two years with the Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir under Jeffery Skidmore and Paul Spicer.
Peter feels very strongly about the importance of interesting young people in choral and vocal music, and serves on the committee of the Midland Festival Chorus, where he have specific responsibilities for developing policies and projects to involve young people. He first became involved with this organisation in 1997 when he received one of five scholarships in the Granada Youth Music Award Scheme.
Peter is a founder member of 4/4 voices – a quartet of young singers who provide wedding and corporate entertainment as well as a 100 minute self contained theatrical show entitled “A Night at the Opera”.
Peter has a great love of Lieder and Art Song and regularly performs recitals in and around Sheffield. He particularly loves singing oratorio and other sacred works – a fact which stems from his upbringing as a Christian and the firm foundations he has in the English choral tradition. He has much to give to oratorio performances in terms of interpretation and conviction.
